You likely think things about yourself that you would never say about others, because it'd be too hurtful.
You might criticize your abilities, your appearance, or your worth.
If it's too cruel to say to others, why do you think it's okay to say it to yourself?
In this video I share a strategy that might help you catch such thoughts.
- Critical thoughts might sound like they come from your own internal voice, but they also might sound like other people in your life who have impacted how you see yourself.
- Those thoughts may have started out external, sounding like that other person when you first internalized them, and now may sound like they come from your own voice... even though their roots are from others.
Notice when you have difficulty being kind to yourself or cutting yourself some slack.
- Why do accept this type of language from yourself?
- Do you tell yourself it's adaptive or protective?
- Would you say those same things to someone you care about?
If it's too cruel to say to someone else, it's too cruel to say to yourself.
